John, a colleague of mine, has had an atrocious past two weeks. He was on the phone talking to his wife who was driving their car. He was giving her directions as she was somewhat lost. She started to exit the highway & he quickly told her it was the wrong exit so she swerved to get back on, clipping an SUV that had sped up to take her place in traffic... John heard the screech, the crunch of metal, and the line went dead. He's a volunteer with the local fire department and shortly thereafter a call went out of a serious accident, life squad was needed. He arrived at the scene and it was in fact his wife. It sounds like a horror movie, doesn't it, but it happened two weeks ago in the Houston TX area. She suffered internal injuries and severe head trauma. So much so that the doctors predicted if she lived, she had a 10% chance of having anything close to a normal life. Heartwrenching news to this young couple with two children, 8 and 10. She held on for 2 weeks and was starting to show signs of improvement, when she contracted an infection and passed away last night. My heart goes out to this family that I barely knew. I chill at the thought of what John is going through. He seems, by his words, to be holding strong but what must be going through his mind... The solace is that they are not alone. The guestbook set up for them online has been flooded with friends, family, coworkers, friends of coworkers, boy scout troops, fire department workers, and so on. The ripples of lives that this family has touched extend far beyond their little town in Texas. My thoughts are heavy for this family today and I walk around with the acute awareness that everything, simply EVERY thing, can be changed in an instant. Rest in peace, April. I'm sorry to hear, thats horrible. I can't imagine the guilt he must be carrying, and the pain..and their children must be so broken..god works in such mysterious ways, its so unfair sometimes. :o(

OMG! That is so aweful.
That is why it is never good to drive and talk, shesh, pulling over seems alot easier in comparison.
That is a tragity. My prayer are with the family. You are a good friend.

That is quite a tragedy. quite scary actually. I guess the lesson for us all is to pull over to get directions and also to not talk on the cell phone while driving.

Maybe I'm just over sesitive right now because of the loss of one of my friends...but this saddens me so much! It's a shame that someone so young and so beautiful was taken so soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family!

My prayers are with John and their children. Life throws us some crazy turns and it seems crazy to take someone like April. A young beautiful mother. Someone who is NEEDED. I've seen young children and fathers have to go on without the females in their lives. It's a hard, hard thing. John, I wish you only the best. Give those children the biggest hug ever. Let them know they're loved.
