Caricature
01.31.05 (9:30 am)   [edit]

Many years ago, vendor held a user meeting in San Antonio, Texas.  I attended them about every other year.  Often they were held in Orlando but they moved it more central for the other US states that year.  They usually "did it up" with one night being Event Night.  In Texas, naturally, the event was Western Night. Everybody got a silly cowboy hat and bandana, they hired cowboys to do rope tricks, we ate western food, ya know the thing.

One of the side show was a caricature artist.  We waited in line and he patiently went through the ritual questions: where ya from, got any hobbies, blah blah blahWhen it was my turn I sat down and bounced, "I wanna be a WENCH!!!  I want boobs out to HERE and a tiny waist!"
He livened up and started sketching.  The people watching started howling with laughter but he was being very coy and wouldn't let me see.  And here's the result:

The sign (in reverse) said Sheryls Cat house and Saloon

  No Credit (on beer)

Beer 25 cents, Poke 10 cents

It seemed really funny until afterwards, when people were passing their pics around to share a laugh. I was embarassed and tried to hide mine, but by then the word was out.

That's also the trip where I tried to keep up drinking whisky with an Irishman.  But that's another story for another day.

Good News!?
01.30.05 (6:50 pm)   [edit]
Oh, first off, the wedding was postponed. Harry stopped by last night for a chat and they decided to get married another day. That's cool. He's a nice young man.

I found my warranty papers on the van. The dealer claimed to have no record of my extended warranty, which I was confident I had bought when I purchased the vehicle. Miracle of miracles, it was found straightaway and now we get to call them tomorrow. If you plan to keep a vehicle more than 5 years, pay the extra $800 for an extended warranty. That's twice now it's saved me at least $3000.

The radon dude stopped by today and gave his recommendation on how to repair the system. I may call in a 2nd company just to feel out the differences. Sounds like it was improperly installed in the first place, so there's the potential of chasing it down but the company went out of business. I'm still not sure about all the radon fuss - is there anything definitive about it? Seems like the USA acceptable limits were about 1/4 of what Europe says is permissible. Maybe I should just move the house to Europe.

Life was a lot easier - albeit more cramped - when I just rented.

By the way - the new avatar is from a sketch done in San Antonio at a company function. It was kaboodles of fun!

Harry Potter Wedding!
01.29.05 (4:44 pm)   [edit]
Tomorrow, as announced by my 3 going on 33 year old, is her wedding to Harry. Her Prince Harry. She has everything she needs - her lovely dress, her panties, her tights, her shiny shoes, her flowers, her princess crown and her phone. And her mudder and fadder.

Now will someone please call Daniel Radcliffe and tell him that a tiny tot is waiting for him to drop by?

Watching Chamber of Secrets for the 19th time,

S.

Miscellany
01.25.05 (9:51 am)   [edit]

I miss Johnny Carson.  From my youth to his retirement, his show was such fun.  I hope the world's image of Americans would be more like Johnny's Tonight Show than say, Jerry Springer.

There's a nice service planned for my grandmother in April. They're going to invite her friends to lunch and to share memories, then we'll go to the cemetery and inter her ashes.  I loves going into the WV mountains, this should be a beautiful and poignant experience.

People whining that the weatherman screwed up when he predicted 6" of snow and we got none?  Shush already!  It missed us!

People struggling to make ends meet should check into a financial advisor - my pal's expenses dropped significantly per month as did his blood pressure.

Getting anything accomplished in this company takes 5 signatures and 14 prayers.  It's SUCH a mess.  What is this, the government?  ;)  I'm trying to get approval for a vendor to come give a sales pitch. That should be a piece of cake, right?  I'm two-levels deep into the approvals. Crikes.

A friend's true colors show when times get rough. Some shine, some hide. It's also a good reminder for me to make extra effort to not go in hiding when someone else might need me.

I'm so glad I moved to a city with multi-cultural foods.  My new favorite is Meditteranean.  Mmmmakes my mouth water thinking about it.  drool.

Hi world. Hope you have a good day.

Only a bit geeky
01.22.05 (12:48 pm)   [edit]
You are 30% geek
You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.

Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You'll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.

Two odd things I've noticed since hearing that my grandmother died this morning.

She had been spending so much time "drifted away" but for a few minutes today, she seemed very sharp and aware... but young. My aunt was there and the nurses were telling her how alert Grandmother had been. While they were visiting, she said she needed help then she closed her eyes and started to pray "Now I lay me down to sleep..." and she died as she recited her prayer.

As I sat down to type this, I looked up and on the tv is the children's show Caillou. Tonight's episode is about Caillou and his sister visiting their grandmother, who was playing piano for them. You don't see the grandmother on the show very often. It reminded me of visits when we were kids and Grandmother would play for us, too.

My brother called me tonight - twice today, actually, a rarity. We marveled at how little we (the 4 of us in the family) rarely talk about things - particularly unpleasant things. We shared some favorite (and least favorite) stories about Grandmother, family funerals, and the black sheep of the family (translation: psycho uncle). It's funny how we have different pieces of information. I'm 7 years older so I have memories of "younger days" that he doesn't - and since he was around after I moved away, he has some memories that I missed out on. So we swapped a tale or two or four, shared a few hearty laughs, and gave each other a long-distance hug. I love my bro. And I'm exhausted. Think I'll go to bed early tonight.

Rest in Peace, Grandmother
01.20.05 (3:54 pm)   [edit]
I just learned that my grandmother passed away. I took the news pretty much in stride at first – she’s had Alzheimer’s for a few years and has literally faded away. My aunt sent a picture of her in their Christmas card and it sent shivers through me – the person in that picture was NOT my grandmother. It was a skeleton with dead eyes slumped over in a wheelchair, nothing like the woman I knew.

She was my last living grandparent. I only knew two of them, my mom’s mom and my dad’s dad both died before I was even born. My grandfather died in 1994 and now my grandmother is gone, too. My grandfather’s death was very sudden – he had gone into the hospital for some surgery, contracted an infection and that is what killed him. My grandmother has been in decline for several years even though she was still fairly young. She would’ve been 86 in 2 weeks.

I feel strange – in a sense I lost her years ago. My aunt brought her up in 2001 to see us when Katie was a few months old and she was already very feeble and unsure who we were. The last time I saw her when she was “herself” was 1998. She had fought (and won) a battle against cancer but the treatments left her with no sense of taste. She literally quit eating and lost over 100 lbs. and seemingly most of her will, too.

It was hard to see her that way, I guess that’s why I didn’t make an effort to go see her these past few years. She used to be so vivacious and witty. She loved decorating and entertaining. She played piano for many years in churches and at the retirement homes just for fun. I wonder what’s happened to her piano L Granted, she could push your buttons (family is GREAT at that, aren’t they?) but I did admire her. She lived through so many things – the coal mine wars, being widowed twice, losing her mother, father, and brother, raising a family in a coal camp with very little to call their own, and so on. Yet she always had a little twinkle in her eye, like she was up to something or about to say something “scandalous”. Unpredictable, that’s a great word to describe her.

I’ve known this day was coming for a long time. I just didn’t know how much I’d miss her. Be at peace, Grandmother. Say hi to the family for me and enjoy watching your great-granddaughter grow up. I hope I do you proud. I know you’re playing piano and singing hymns with the angels tonight.

Ahhh...
01.18.05 (8:11 am)   [edit]

I fell asleep before 10 p.m. again.  Ya know what?  I could get used to this 6-7 hours of solid sleep thing.  I almost feel human today.  I made it to work on time!  I even put on makeup!

I finally acknowledged that my panty-size has gone up and put away the panties that are two small.  So now instead of feeling lousy all day because (1) my panties are too tight and (2) that means I'm fatter (L-L-L-LOSER!!), now I feel comfy and am skipping around the place.

Funny what a little comfort will do for your spirits.

Phantom of the Hot Blogs
01.14.05 (8:21 am)   [edit]

I see the Phantom of the Hot Blogs has been up to his/her tricks again.  I'll say from the get-go that I think it's kinda funny.  It's a public service, in a way, to highlight blogs that might not otherwise get a lot of traffic.  But anyone who thinks it means anything is goofy.  :)

The rank/position on the list seems to be determined by the number of comments made on your blog so it's really easy for someone (bot?) to mess around with it.  You may notice that every now and then that brand new blogs suddenly pop up in the top 10.  If you take a look, you'll see one or two of their posts suddenly have 200-300 blank or nonsense comments from "newbie" or some other outside user.

Some bloggers have gone so far as to accuse the blog owners of such trickery and I say "Nay!".  It happened to me a while back along with 3-4 others.. now we've fallen off and others have been boosted up.  Just enjoy the view! :)

Two Marvelous Things
01.12.05 (9:56 am)   [edit]

First, my droolfest.  The dashing Gerard Butler was on the Tonight Show last night and he was adorable.  I love those bright green-blue eyes and hell yeah, the Scottish accent doesn't hurt.  LOL!

Second and MUCH more important for the universe - my daughter ROCKS.  This morning was her first trip to the dentist. I'd gotten a referral for a pediatric dentist from a friend at work and they were right on the money. They were wonderful.  They sent Katie a package full of the gadgets they use at the office - a little mirror, one of their tooth polishing widgets, a glove and a mask.  I was the dentist first to explain to her what happens.  Then Doug and I let her be dentist.  She would say things like "tsk tsk, this looks bad.  You have a cabbity."   Did I mention she was stark naked at the time?  If she hadn't been, I would post a pic but there are laws, you know.  Damn, she's funny.

She didn't seem very nervous going in or while we were there.  In fact afterward, she didn't want to leave!  She liked the toys they had and the ladies were incredibly gentle and kind. They explained every step to her and let her try things out with her hand along the way.  She was very still and followed instructions 100 times better than she does at home :)

They found 2 cavities so we'll go back next week for the fillings.  That visit may not go quite so well. They said they'd give her a little "laughing gas" to relax her and it shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes.  I hope my little trooper keeps a troopin.  She seriously impressed me this morning.

Afterwards, she started wilting - big ole tears and nothing was quite right.  I think she was decompressing after holding it together.  We got to daycare and she didn't want me to leave.  It was story time so I sat on the floor with her for a few minutes and then she gave me a kiss and said "bye Mommy" so we took our cue and left.  But by then *I* didn't want to go, my baby looked so sad :(

Yessiree, my girl has some spirit and strength behind those big blue eyes.  Yes!!!

Boobie Talk
01.10.05 (9:29 pm)   [edit]
Katie slept in a bit so I went ahead with my shower and got partially dressed. I was sitting on the bed in my bra and panties as she started to slowly awake. I can't remember how the silly conversation got but we wound up talking about a bowl full of jelly. I asked her if she could shake like a bowl of jelly and she told me she wasn't jelly, she's a girl.

She leaned up like she was going to give me big hug. She laid her head on my chest for a second, then leaned back. She patted my breasts (which wobbled) and said "Mom, what are those big things?" Now she knows what breasts are, and nipples, and that you feed babies with them... so we've had that conversation before. Apparently we're going to have it again.
"They're my breasts, Katie".
She patted her own chest and said "I can't find mine".
"You know where your nipples are, right?"
"yes"
"Well, those are your breasts."
She thought for a second. "Mine are tiny, yours are big."
"Well sweetie, as your body gets larger so will your breasts."

And then I said a silent prayer, "Thank you, God, for giving me a girl, not a boy." I don't even know how to try to explain one of those things to a toddler.

Be Grateful
01.07.05 (5:25 pm)   [edit]
... that I don't have sound. Katie and I just played a concert - she on harmonica, I played the recorder. Well, the 3 notes I can get to come out of the darn thing without squeaking. It was LOVELY.

... that blogs don't have smell. We ate chili for dinner.

... that it is finally FRIDAY!!!

More Family Photos
01.06.05 (9:51 am)   [edit]

Here's a couple more pics from photo day with my folks. My Dad HATES having his picture made, especially when they start with the "ok, tilt your head a little more this way, now lean that way, now smile, no tilt a little more, back some... " It makes him NUTS.  Look, he's nearly smiling :)

Toddler Teeth advice?
01.06.05 (9:45 am)   [edit]

My daughter has a dark spot on one of her molars.  She's 3 1/2 and hasn't been to a dentist yet and freaks at the idea.  Why, I dunno, neither her Dad nor I have ever made a big deal about it.  They've even had a dentist visit their school and talk about what they do, passing out toothbrushes etc.

Any advice how to soothe her concerns for her first visit? And do they fill baby teeth, if this turns out to be a cavity?

Thanks in advance...

Phantom of the Opera
01.02.05 (9:56 pm)   [edit]
I was quite pleased to discover that POTO was showing at a nearby theater today. My husband had plans to watch icky gory movies and Katie was off with the babysitter. I paid my $8 billion for a coke and nachos - although they were out of nachos - so I tried a hot dog - but they were out of buns - they basically FORCED me to eat popcorn, 95% of which I brought home. The theater was pretty full so I sat in one of the "couple seats" - ya know the skinny row of 2 seats that run up the outside aisles. After the dozen required previews, it finally started.

The music is gorgeous - there is an occasional electric guitar thrown in - a heads up for the purists. :) "Christine" is beautiful and her voice angellic. Minnie Driver was hilariously diva-ish. The sets are lush and fantabulous, and Gerry (the Phantom) was quite drool-worthy. Oh my gosh. The romantic lead wasn't too bad on the eyes and ears, either.

I knew nothing about the story so I was a complete neophyte (I'd say virgin, but...) I was swept away - I found myself in tears by the end of the film. Oh to have 2 handsome men vying for your affections! Chick flick? I think so - very few battles and very little gore, though there is lots of cleavage for the males to view ;) I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it for anyone who enjoys the theater and wants a couple of hours of romantic escape.

Various 01/01/05 Thoughts
01.01.05 (12:43 pm)   [edit]
A few years ago, I sorta-kinda broke an ice sculpture at the Greenbrier Resort in WV with my best pal Judy laughing at me. Happy NeV Year!

Being on vacation is cool except when they PAGE YOU THREE TIMES ANYWAY. Oh well, at least they need me.

Please give to the tsunami disaster relief funds. Be sure to chose a reputable one so the aid gets to those who need it. Even $5 or $10 will help feed someone who is hungry or give them a blanket.

I welcomed the new year with my very bouncy daughter at my side. She's not sure she understands what is so big about a new year but it does mean we get to go shopping for a new calendar, and she likes shopping. That's my girl!

What a male considers clean will often send a female screaming for the disinfectant.

I believe God makes children so cute so that the memory of it stays with you, deterring you from killing them as they get older.

Continuing that theory, that's one downside to being a step-parent - you often don't get to experience the 'cute' years.

The studies can say anything they want to, it's chocolate that soothes the savage beast - at least in MY house.

Steve Burns (Blues Clues) does a lousy Elvis impersonation.

There is nothing quite like an amazing pair of eyes.
