Like a Jewel
11.30.04 (6:42 pm)   [edit]
I have to do something to make up for the totally classless post earlier  I had debated whether or not to post it - but I have many facets to my personality and they combine together to make me "me". It's the multi-facets that make a jewel stand out from the crowd.

I enjoy going to the symphony where I sit quietly and applaud graciously in the appropriate spots*, the movie theater where I'll impulsively scream, laugh or cheer, and NASCAR races where I scream my heart out for my driver and anyone else who strikes my fancy. (Rest in Peace, dear #3)

*unless I'm with Judy, when it turns into a contest to see who can make the other act more inappropriately. We really shouldn't be allowed in quiet places (like church) together. Yea, verily.

I love choral music, madrigals, and the winners of the yodelling contests they have on the Tonight Show.

I laugh at Bill Cosby, Bill Engvall, Jeff Foxworthy, Billy Connolly, and Lewis Black (in small doses). I may smile at some George Carlin bits and often turn off Sam Kinison. Oh. Oh. Oh. {FYI: Andrew Dice Clay is not allowed on the airwaves in my presence.}

I like the Mamas and the Papas, Queen, some Yes (yes, they're pretentious but the old stuff is SO fun to sing), James Taylor, John Denver - Almost Heaven!, Andy Williams, Willie Nelson, Luther Vandross, Ray Stevens, Nick Drake, the Three Tenors, Josh Groban, Queen Latifah, Sarah Vaughn, Take 6, Manhattan Transfer, just to name a sliver of my CD collection.

I enjoy mysteries like James Patterson, Tom Clancy; science fiction a la Arthur C. Clarke; nearly all Romantic poets, history & genealogy books, maps (oh Lordie how I love maps), mail order catalogs...

I like watching cheesy events on tv - parades, (some) award shows, Christmas specials, kids shows, educational tv, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, late night talk shows, Whose Line is it Anyway, Six Feet Under.

I love throwing ball with my daughter, frisbee with the kids, playing solitaire, going for romantic walks, taking a drive through the mountains, going out to eat, making homemade pizza, spying rainbows, listening to raindrops, smelling roses, being with those I love.

This world is full of so many amazing things and opportunities. Step out of the rut and try something new. Our lives are simply too short not to enjoy every moment we can. And that's why everyone should eat a chocolate chip cookie tonight and if you really can't bring yourself to do it, would you send them to me? Thanks! ;)

For my Dearest, Truest Friends...
11.29.04 (8:05 am)   [edit]
In this busy season, it's important to stop and take time to think of all we're thankful for. I borrowed this from Saint027 but it touched me deeply and ... ummm... some other rot.

If you're from RF2, you KNOW this Bud's for you... if you're one of my classier friends, please avert your eyes and back away now. Please!

My Dream Guy
11.28.04 (9:12 pm)   [edit]
Ok girls, here he is. The guy we've ALL had secret dreams about, the one who will make us feel whole... Ready?

Sure?

Ok... but I saw him first

A high compliment
11.27.04 (9:27 pm)   [edit]
I was paid an indirect but high compliment yesterday. My mom, daughter and I were out shopping. If you've never been shopping with a toddler, I'm sure you've witnessed it. :? Katie was in a good mood basically but we'd been hitting a few stores and she was starting to get shopped out - a little bit whiney, which can lead to a huge meltdown.

Mom had to return a few items so she was in the customer service line, I had Katie in a cart and was waiting off to the side. Katie started getting a bit squirmy and wanted down but with the huge post-Thanksgiving sales, I wanted to keep her in the cart so we'd know where she was. So I sense Katie getting close to the edge but I got her soothed and we were looking around, touching the Santas, and so on.

Mom came back and told me that the lady behind her in line had noticed me and Katie and said "look at that mom with her daughter, she's such a patient mom, there should be more of those." Mom said "She'd better be patient, that's my daughter and granddaughter". The hardly-veiled threat made me laugh but it was so cool that someone noticed. I try really hard to be a patient, loving, yet firm Mom and Katie is truly a special little girl. I'd like to think I've had something to do with that, but it could be pure luck :)

Anyway, it made me feel really good!

Lucy, I'm Home!
11.27.04 (6:58 pm)   [edit]
Got back from the parental units' this afternoon. The drive back was fairly uneventful - rainy and very windy, pushing the van all over the road - so I had to pay attention. Lots of cops, so no speeding. In other words, no fun :) I picked up some Skyline for dinner. Mmmm, it's just right when coming back home and a tasty change after all that turkey.

I still have 2 days of "holiday" left. Tomorrow and Monday will be spent doing some serious housecleaning. Monday will be easier since the peanut will be at daycare. It's hard to purge toys with her watching ;) You know how it is, things that haven't been touched in months suddenly become the favorite when they're going into the Goodwill bag.

Mom keeps her house absolutely spotless and low clutter. When you see pictures of those homes in a magazine, you kinda think 'surely nobody actually lives like that' but my parents do. It's not that they have no knicknacks or memorabilia, they have tons of it, but it's all displayed so beautifully. I obviously missed that gene (and have a house half their size, but that's no excuse). After spending 3 days in a clean clutter-free environment, I am inspired. Wish me luck!

Boy am I stuffed!

Great food at Mom and Dad's last night
Great food at my brother & sis-in-laws today...
What a fabulous holiday, eh?!
Must've been a good one, no fights broke out, no one was overly rude.  There has been one tragedy, however...

The Batman Spoon and Fork are missing.  (see blog of Nov. 12) I suspect my brother broke into Mom & Dad's house and spirited them away to his place while they've been out of town.  Mischief has been afoot, I tell you.  And there will be vengence.  Oh yes, there WILL be...

Anyone have first-hand knowledge about this company? My best-friend's hubby is looking into it and what I found on the internet didn't excite me.  Thoughts?

John Lennon and Things in my Purse
11.23.04 (11:53 am)   [edit]

Went to Fuddruckers for lunch. Very hard to pee with John Lennon watching you.

This afternoon I'm finally cleaning out my purse - yup, it's the day before a vacation!  And I got busted by the building Director who just laughed (she understands, apparently).  Here's the tally:

1 wallet, overstuffed with receipts and understuffed with money
1 checkbook, sadly in need of balancing
1 cellphone, my chain to the office
1 PDA, my "little black book"   ;)
1 wallet-inset full of pics of Katie
1 hairbrush w/mirror
3 black ballpoint pens
1 blue ballpoint pen - but the barrel glows, it's so COOL
1 red ballpoint pen
1 blue sharpie
1 tube of mascara
3 tubes of ChapStick-like lip balm
7 tubes of lipstick - fascinating, since I rarely wear any
1 magnet from my fave restaurant
2 crayons, 1 blue and 1 green
5 hairclips for Katie
1 earpiece thingy for the cell phone so I can drive hands-free
1 neckace confiscated from the girl who wasn't supposed to wear it out of the house
2 bottles of meds: pain relievers and Pepto Bismol (much needed yesterday)
2 unidentified keys on a Pooh bear keychain
1 placemat from the Chinese restaurant (for the fortunes)
2 bills I keep forgetting to pay
2 bills I keep postponing paying  ;) (Come and get me, coppers!)
9 receipts I have since thrown away
6 business cards I should store at home
7 Curves bucks which I dropped out of months ago
my backup key to the car
7 coughdrops so old I proclaim them "dead"
1 Saturn mint, so old I proclaimed it "dead" as well
1 smashed fortune cookie
1 Tootsie Roll
1 lollipop
5 nasty tissues
1 usable tissue
1 wing from a McDonald's Kids Meal toy
8 different loose tablets for cold/sinus/allergy
1 pack of Juicy Fruit
1 expired coupon from Burger King that I never intended to use, anyway
1 bottle opener that was a giveaway from work
3 tubes of eye medicine
1 wet nap
1/2 a roll of antacid (I AM in IT, you know)
1 part of an earring that I'm pretty sure the mate to is at home
2 sticky gumballs (I am NOT saying anything rude.. )
1 paperclip (only ONE?)
1 button that goes to... :?: I have no idea
1 dollar exactly in change (not on purpose, of course)
numerous crumbs from pulverized aspirin, chips and gum - UGH
1 rock - not crack, a real rock - doesn't everyone carry rocks in their purse? (Moms, raise your hands!)

No wonder my shoulder hurts and the straps on my purse always break.

Did I wake up on the wrong planet?
11.23.04 (9:22 am)   [edit]

The newstories today have really freaked me out:

The hunter that got po'd over being asked to leave a deer stand freaked out and shot 8 - 6 have now died.

A woman in Texas cut the arms off her 11 month old baby girl.

Libraries in Orlando are now barring adults from browsing in the kid's section

Someone paid $28,000 for a sandwich that someone else believes looks like the Virgin Mary

And that stupid JFK Assassination "game" that was announced recently...

Good grief, Charlie Brown.  What on Earth is going on lately?!

Whew!
11.23.04 (7:33 am)   [edit]

Katie and I both feel much better, thanks everybody :)  Man what a nasty stomach bug that was.  I'll spare you all the details!

So, besides bitching about tblog, not much new to report.  Just glad to be here :)

My turn
11.22.04 (4:26 pm)   [edit]
Katie is feeling better but I got whatever stomach bug she had starting at 4 a.m. this morning. I drug myself into work by 9 and back home at 12:30, slept til 4:30. I'd love to go back to sleep but it's 6:30 p.m. and Katie doesn't look convinced that it's her bedtime too :)

I'm glad to see tblog came back up today but even I have my limits. I've been trying out livejournal and blogger.com (also under AlmstHvn) to see how they "feel". It's really a shame, because I love the features tblog offers and don't really want to leave - but most of my favorite peoples are leaving, too.

In those immortal words of Katie, just remember "I not nakey, I'm wearing socks!"

I Am Mustache Man!
11.20.04 (4:48 pm)   [edit]
Katie - wearing a pair of panties, white socks and black ballet shoes, just made up a song "I am Mustache Man!", sung while dancing and holding a purple necklace under her nose.

I think she's feeling better.

So far, Ok.
11.20.04 (3:16 pm)   [edit]
"Mommy, my tummy hurts." Bluppp! That went on from 2 a.m. until 9 this morning. She isn't running a fever or acting sick, just nothing stays in her stomach. Since then, she's acting fine - just won't eat anything just yet. I'm not pushing, she'll eat when she needs it. I did manage to catch an hour nap this morning and another this afternoon while Katie just snuggled up in my lap with her blankie and pacifier. It was snuggly and cozy and.. yawn... I think I need another nap. Only 4 more hours to go til bedtime.

This rainy overcast too-cold for warm clothes and too warm for cold clothes drives me crazy and I'd like it to stop. Now, please. Maybe I should look into one of those sun-lamps. I need sun beams!

Made in Heaven
11.19.04 (12:46 pm)   [edit]

Thanks to a well-needed reminder from my friends I’ve been listening to the Queen CD  “Made in Heaven” today.  I have loved Queen deeply ever since I first heard “Killer Queen” back in – well, I was young (wink).   The hours I spent with a hairbrush in my hand, dancing and singing along with their first 6 or so albums… good fun!  My parents had very little money so I’d skip lunches for a week to save up enough money for an LP – which means that every record I had was carefully chosen and cherished (except the Bay City Rollers – I’m not sure how they got in there)

I was thrilled when Queen released “Innuendo” in 1991.  It was like welcoming home an old friend after years of absence.  I played it again and again, poring over the booklet (I miss album covers and record sleeves, I do!), drinking it in.  I’d stuck with them even through the dreadful Hot Space album.  Miracle was nice but Innuendo blew me away.  My boys were back!  I was completely elated. It affected me so strongly – I love these guys passionately, all their foibles and faults and strengths and genius and talent and … I love them.

November 23, 1991 -  I heard that Freddie was sick with AIDS.  And the next day he was gone.  Gone?  They couldn’t be serious.   It did not compute that he was dead.  Stunned, I listened to Innuendo again - this time I heard how he was saying goodbye.  "These are the Days of Our Lives" and "The Show Must Go On", in particular.  I was devastated for weeks and that’s no exaggeration.  Queen had been my solace and strength for years.  To think he’d suffered all that time and had chosen to keep it private.  But this was 13 years ago and people didn’t talk about homosexuality much less AIDS very much at all.  It would have created a frenzy had he gone public sooner - and that saddened me even more.

Most of Made in Heaven was recorded in the last months of his life.  It is a wonderful, lovely album full of reflection, longing, acceptance, farewell, love and hope.  It’s uplifting, masking the heart wrenching efforts Freddie had gone through to do his last recordings.  His soaring strength and spirit shine brightly through.

Freddie, you’ve been gone nearly 13 years.  My heart still aches for you and I also rejoice that the world got to share your outrageous talent and humor.  I hope you knew how much you were loved - and still are. Rest in Peace.

Communication Breakdown
11.18.04 (10:33 am)   [edit]

I blogged earlier about my spur-of-the-moment vacation in California with my pal Gary.   Gary had been a great internet-friend (I call it ‘i-friend’) for years.  We’d spoken on the phone many times and his accent is so thick I had a very difficult time understanding him, but it sounded gorgeous so who cared.  He’s from Newcastle in northern England, close to the Scottish border. I understand that he is easy to understand compared to his father, which frankly, scares me. As for myself - I grew up in Mississippi, lived in West Virginia for 15 years and have been in the Midwest for 20 years, so my accent is a weird blend of southern-hillbilly-midwes tern.

We’re in the rental car and we vaguely decided to drive around in the mountains outside of Los Angeles.  I’m driving (bloody Brit, never drove a car and now wasn’t the time to start)  ;) and he had the map.  Here’s the conversation.
“Where do I turn?”
”Highway eigh-ee”
“What?”
“Eigh-ee”.
Ok, so now I’m looking for highway 80.  Doesn’t that seem appropriate?  We’re cruising along, listening to tunes and babbling about things when he yells
“You missed it!”
“I did not!”
“Yes you did, that was eigh-ee!”
“It was not, it was 18!”
“THAT’S WHAT I SAID!”

At the time, it was frustrating but now I think it’s hilarious.  We made some other turn and happened across a steak house.  It was at the foot of the mountains and it was the BEST steak we’d ever had.  By the way, for a skinny guy, Gaz can eat more than any human I’d seen before or since.  From there, here are the directions:  we drove west, turned right, drove awhile.. and then cut right again.  It was the most beautiful scenery I’d ever seen.  We stopped and took pictures and just stood in the desert sun for awhile.  Glorious.  (Turns out we were quite close to Joshua Tree National Park)

Anyhoo, it was great fun and when we talked later, he said that of all the touristy things we did that week, his favorite day was the day we just wandered around.  See, if I’d turned on 18 we would’ve missed out  J

Here we go again
11.16.04 (6:36 pm)   [edit]
I sent an email to one of my project leads today and shortly after my phone
rang. "Pssst.... just wanted to let you know, he won't be calling you back..
He was let go yesterday afternoon."

A week ago, my cohort in crime was transferred to another department.

Looks like they're cleaning house again. It must be nearing Christmas, that
seems to be when they lay people off.

No, no stress here.

22 Questions
11.16.04 (9:18 am)   [edit]
Borrowed from Tal who got it from someone else ... you know how these things go!

1: Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, find line 4. Write down what it says:
”The spirits of people will rise above
swaying like women while men dance,
swaying with dandelion puffs in their hands”
-- Native American Songs and Poems

close second would be:
“Custom JSPs also support the use of other technologies, such as Sapphire Custom Tags, services/APIs/protocols defined by the J2EE platorm specifications, and classes in the sapphire.* package” (Sapphire Training manual – thrilling, eh)

2: Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What do you touch first?: phone

3: What is the last thing you watched on TV?:
Peep and the Big Wide World – and awesome children’s show on Discovery channel

4: WITHOUT LOOKING, guess what the time is: 11 a.m.

5: Now look at the clock, what is the actual time?: 11:05 a.m.

6: With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?: ventilation system, gal across the hall telling a story

7: When did you last step outside? What were you doing?: 9 a.m., arriving at work

8: before you came to this website, what did you look at?: antal’s blog I think he's really cute :)

9: what are you wearing?: khaki slacks, light blue long sleeve top, “kitty” socks, brown mary-jane shoes, and my silver celtic jewelry.

10: Did you dream last night?: yes. Not telling.

11: When did you last laugh?: This morning, hearing of my daughter exclaiming “Jack is going to LOVE my pretty dress – I can’t WAIT until we’re married!” (she’s 3 ½)

12: What is on the walls of the room you are in?: map of Europe, pics of my daughter and 2 favorite European guys, calendar, project plan that is months out of date

13. Seen anything weird lately?: a concrete pig dressed as a turkey – is that weird?

14: What do you think of this quiz?: s’ok so far

15: What is the last film you saw?:
on tv – Monty Python and the Holy Grail
in the theater – Shrek 2? I can’t recall

16: If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy first?: I’d pay off my debts, then hire a cleaning crew to purge my house of all the clutter. Then I’d travel to Europe for a few months, come back and start the women’s shelter I’ve always dreamed of.

17: Tell me something about you that I don't know: I’m wearing purple panties today. Now, aren’t you glad you asked?

18: If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?:
I like Tal’s answer – make people love each other. Once we have that, the other things fall nicely into place. No more wars, starvation, homelessness…

19: Do you like to dance?: slow dancing, yes
J

20: George Bush: is he a power-crazy nut case or some one who is finally doing something that has needed to be done for years?: I assume they mean “W”. Yes and no. I do think he is abusing his powers and while some action was necessary, I believe he choose poorly.

21(a): Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?/21(b): Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him?:
My first was a girl, Kathryn for my mom.
For a boy I like David, Steven, or Michael (my Dad).

22: Would you ever consider living abroad?: yep. If my daughter and parents could come, too.

What Planet are you From?
11.15.04 (12:16 pm)   [edit]

From the same site as the blog below... this one hit me pretty closely, I think!

You Are From Neptune

You are dreamy and mystical, with a natural psychic ability.
You love music, poetry, dance, and (most of all) the open sea.
Your soul is filled with possibilities, and your heart overflows with compassion.
You can be in a room full of friendly people and feel all alone.
If you don't get carried away with one idea, your spiritual nature will see you through anything.

Another Brother Story
11.13.04 (7:03 am)   [edit]
Dad is a minister, Mom was in the choir. I'm 7 years older which meant before most church services, it was just me and Rob in the house and I was to get us to church on time. It was a whole yard and a half away so it wasn't the distance that made us late :?

It was family tradition that we kids got to open one gift on Christmas Eve. Mom and Dad had left already and Rob was downstairs squishing all the presents to figure out which one was the panda bear he'd been promised. That was the one he wanted to open on Christmas Eve. Well, being the oh-so-wise-and-mature big sister, I "helped". Rob had found the right one, but I was determined to convince him otherwise.

It was another family tradition that you got at least one gift that Mom knew we'd hate but we needed anyway. Invariably this was socks.

So Rob is squishing his panda-bear present (I knew, coz I helped wrap it) and he was getting really excited that this was the one. I said "nah uh, it's just socks" - this infuriated him. The more he insisted it was the panda, the more smugly I answered that it wasn't until it reached the breaking point - literally. He chased me up the stairs and I slammed my bedroom door shut. He started flinging himself against the door to break it down and next thing we knew, his foot was on one side of the door and the rest of his body on the other. He started screaming bloody murder and I was terrified he was really hurt. Nope, he was screaming "Mom's gonna kill me! Mom's gonna kill me!"

See, in our house, we didn't have the fear of God put into us, it was the fear of Mom. One lift of the eyebrow and you knew something bad was coming (she'd had years of practice, being a teacher).

I helped him pull his foot back through, we patched him and the door up as best we could, calmed ourselves down and went to church - all the time thinking "we're dead meat". Protective Big Sister kicked in and I told Rob not to worry, I'd egged him on so it was my fault. But still, who knew what we would face when we all got back home?

Fast forwarding to the end, Mom and Dad were a bit upset but it was so funny it didn't last long. Rob got his panda bear and I don't remember - I think I had to pass on my "early" gift that year, but it was worth it.

I think I'll email Rob's church secretary - if she ever wants to get his goat, all she has to say is "nah uh, it's just SOOOOOCKS".

THE Batman Fork
11.12.04 (11:59 am)   [edit]
When we were kids, Mom found a child's silverware set with Batman on it.  I don't remember if there was ever a knife, but there is one spoon and one fork.  I'm 7 years older than my brother and we have ALWAYS argued over who gets the Batman fork.  The spoon goes to the "loser".  I don't know why we decided the fork was better than the spoon, but there ya go.  Sibling rivalry doesn't have to make sense, it just has to make noise ;)

I'm 41 and he's 34 and at our last get together, we STILL argued over the fork.  Mom settled it though, she gave it to my daughter.  DAMN!   &n bsp; ...  I call dibs on the spoon!!!

Was there any one thing in particular you and your siblings battled over?

A Brief Love Poem
11.12.04 (8:49 am)   [edit]

I love you when you're happy, I love you when you're sad
I love you when you're good to me, I love you when you're bad.
I love you when the moon shines, and glistens off your toes
but most of all I love you when you aren't wearing clothes.

What's in a Name?
11.11.04 (8:49 am)   [edit]

My name is Sheryl.  Whenever I go somewhere I have to spell it.  “It’s Sheryl with an “S””.  That freaks them out – like they know how to spell Cheryl but Sheryl throws them for some reason…

When I was a kid, I was REALLY particular.  My family nickname comes from our years in Mississippi.  The boy next door couldn’t say “Sheryl Lynn”, it came out Shey Lee.  I was 3 and don’t remember but Mom says I would argue loudly with him that my name was SHERYL LYNN  NOT SHEY LEE.   It used to make my parents laugh and it stuck.

In high school, there was also a Shirley and our last names were very similar.  We sat next to each other in study hall and one day they paged Shirley but with my last name.  Shirl and I looked at each other, not sure which one of us was in trouble but neither wanted to admit it, so we didn’t say anything.  Teacher checked, saw no name match and sent the page back to the front office.  They later came back and asked for me.  They were really upset that I’d made them go up and down all the steps twice and asked why I didn’t answer.  “Because that wasn’t my name” I stubbornly replied.

Somewhere along the line I guess I figured out that the label isn’t what defines me and that it’s ok to be different.  Now I’ll answer to most anything that is “clean”  Sher, Shey, Alms, Hvn, whatever – doesn’t really matter. But I will warn you - if you’re a friend of mine and spell it “Cheryl”, there will be trouble and you know how stubborn hillbillies can be ;)

Starry Night
11.09.04 (10:11 pm)   [edit]
One of my very favorite paintings is Vincent Van Gogh's "The Starry Night".

From J. van der Wolk, "Vincent Van Gogh: Paintings and Drawings": He wanted to paint a starry night as an example of working from the imagination... 'we may succeed in creating a more exciting and comforting nature than we can discern with a single glimpse of reality', he wrote.

I enjoy impressionism more than realism, and the quote above sums it up for me. I respond to most things emotionally - music, literature, etc. I most likely won't remember details but I remember impressions, the feelings that were generated as I viewed/read. It also occurred to me that with my eyesight, most things look a little fuzzy so maybe that's a factor, too!

A wonderful companion to this painting is the song "Vincent" by Don McLean. Hopefully the link will work so you can view these lovely words. If you've not heard the tune before, it is soft, beautiful and haunting. Buy it, borrow it, download it - experience it.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

and then there was this guy...
11.09.04 (11:08 am)   [edit]
I last blogged about a great "internet meet".  Well, here's another that turned out differently.  This happened a year before the Gary story, when I was in a major rebellion phase against always doing the right thing.  In other words, I was old enough and smart enough to know better but didn't give a damn.

His name was Tony. We chatted on IRC for a year.  He was quite funny, a bit more brutish than I cared for (like going into other chatrooms with a different nicknames to harass people) but he could always make me laugh.  He was a retired military guy and had the physique of a man that had gone slightly out of shape but still looked great.  He was a male nurse, which I thought was very cool.  He was married but they were separated with 2 kids.  One day he said he couldn't wait any more and he got in the car and drove the 3 hours over.  I met him at his hotel room.  It was hot and steamy and I don't mean the temperature.  We didn't have "true" sex but it was close enough.  [I was quite lucky in that regard.]

About 2 weeks later, he told me I should get tested, that he'd come up HIV positive.  It made him realize what his family meant to him and he wanted to focus on them with his remaining time.  So I was dumped and possibly infected in one quick phone call.  I FREAKED. There shouldn't have been a way for me to get infected but not being sure and having done other stupid things in the previous months, I went and got tested - and again 6 months later.  Both clear.  Phew.

Turns out - surprise!  He and his wife had always lived together with no plans for otherwise... he wasn't HIV+ just wanted a way to get rid of me ... and what REALLY pissed me off is that he had moved on and was hitting on my best friend.  I amused myself with fantasies of revenge for awhile but eventually it faded - in fact, I can't think of his last name any more.

So, you really never know.  Be careful out there folks.

Some Times You Just Gotta Say WTF
11.08.04 (9:42 pm)   [edit]
I had a pal that I'd chatted with over the internet for years. I live in the US, he was in England. We spoke on the phone several times (I could NOT understand a damn thing he said, he's from Newcastle) but had never met in person. One night (1999) we're chatting via IRC and he's very bummed. We talked about places he'd like to visit in the USA. While we talked I surfed the Delta website. I had thousands of free miles I'd never cashed in and within a week he was booked to fly to Los Angeles with a layover in Cincinnati. Back then you were allowed into the gate areas to visit passengers so we met for about 20-30 minutes before he had to hop the next plane. I still couldn't understand a f'ing word he said, but damn he was cute for having just spent 8-9 hours on a plane.

Long story short (too late!) he had a great time in LA and within a couple of weeks he was back! This time, I went too! I was scared out of my mind (still not convinced he wasn't an escapee or something). Hey, it's the Internet, who knows?! We spent 5 days out in the LA/Hollywood area and had SO MUCH FUN. We went to a jazz festival at the Hollywood Bowl. We went to a baseball game. We got sunburned at the beach and made fun of the muscle-builders. We met some of his favorite musicians. We did Universal Stud(io), and spent a day just driving around in the desert.

I was insane to share a hotel room with a virtual stranger. I had plenty of time to think about it on the plane out to LAX and had to pop one or two Xanax that day or I might have chickend out! But I'd spent my life doing things "by the book" and decided - screw it. I'm going to go for it and hope for the best. It was the very best vacation I've ever had and I'm SO glad I did.

If not for this crazy lark, I would not know Mike Keneally's music, I wouldn't have met Doug and had this beautiful daughter, I would not have such precious friends all around the world (see the Music slideshow off to the right).

Gary now lives in Australia with his lovely bride Kieryn and I don't know when we might meet again. His birthday is in a couple of weeks. Gaz, I lift my cup to you. Cheers to you, your wife, your new life together, for taking some crazy chick up on a crazy offer, and for being a perfect gentleman through the whole week (damn!) ;) It came at a time when my view on the world was quite dark and it restored my faith in mankind, as trite as that sounds. Bless you dear!

I Found the Words
11.08.04 (7:19 am)   [edit]

It took me awhile, but I found them – literally, in a church newsletter.  You see, I feel my reactions but I'm not very good at finding the right words to respond.  The hate flying around since the election disturbed me greatly.  I’m a person of faith and feel I made my choice with great thought and reflection.  The idea that the moral people won and the people that lost aren’t has been upsetting.  Then I found this poem, author unknown.  I feel it speaks for me and with a few word substitutions, I think it adapts and fits most everyone.

I Am A Christian

When I say, “I am a Christian”  I'm not shouting, “I’m clean living.”
I’m whispering, “I was lost"  now I'm found and forgiven.

When I say, “I am a Christian”  I don’t speak of this with pride
I’m confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say, “I am a Christian” I’m not trying to be strong.
I’m professing that I’m weak And need His strength to carry on.

When I say, “I am a Christian” I'm not bragging of success.
I’m admitting I have failed and need God to clean the mess.

When I say, “I am a Christian” I’m not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible But God believes I’m worth it.

When I say, “I am a Christian” I still feel the sting of pain;
I have my share of heartaches So I call upon His name.

When I say, “I am a Christian” I’m not “holier than thou.”
I’m just a simple sinner who’s received God’s grace somehow.

And another thing

If a child drops a wet lollipop and it sticks to the cat's tail, neither the cat nor the child will be happy.

Toby has really long fur and flicks his tail, as cats do, with great finesse. WHOOSH - it caught the sucker ... fwoosh!  It wrapped around... WHOOSH (agitated now) it got stuck even more... MRROWW!  Tobe was pissed. Katie was screaming.  I'm trying not to laugh.  I grabbed the cat and a pair of scissors and was lucky enough to cut it free with one hand - the other holding the wriggling I'm A CAT YOU MAY NOT HOLD ME beastie.  Ewww it was disgusting (and funny as all get out)

Learn something new every day
11.07.04 (10:17 am)   [edit]
Did you know that if you layer pepper, salt, a penny, a dime, and hand lotion in the well of a candle-stick then hide it for an undetermined amount of time, you wind up with a greenish gooey grainy mess? The layering was actually kinda pretty...

Question is : was she making a mess or making art?

Attila - Movie Review
11.07.04 (1:04 am)   [edit]
The History Channel has been running the movie Attila all day.
Here's my in-depth review:
Gerard Butler has a great chest
The Huns had remarkably clean & straight teeth
The Romans, Gauls, and Huns all sound exactly alike
Gerard Butler has a magnificent chest
I expected more barbary from barbarians
I have no idea if it's historically accurate or not
Gerard has the most incredible eyes on the planet
The movie including commercials is 4 hours long
Did I mention Gerard? ... swoon!

Web Fasting
11.06.04 (9:20 pm)   [edit]
Our home internet service went down in the wee hours of Thursday morning and didn't come back up until Saturday night. I became painfully aware of just how addicted I am. I expected the obvious - no tblog, email, or my favorite newsgroup. But there are so many little things...

During a movie, I'll pop on IMDB to find out who played a part, then surf around to see what else they've done.
An ad for a new movie comes on, I pop on IMDB and the local cinema websites to find out times.
I tend to email people rather than call them.
I have a friend in the Netherlands and decided I know very little about his country and wanted to look something up.
I look up maps, history, art etc. of whatever strikes my fancy - often.

Of course, there are the positives:
Instead of surfing, I cracked open a couple of books.
I missed a few "who played what"'s but managed to live anyway.
There were no debates about the election ;)
And I amused myself by giving my cat more catnip than he's ever had. I'm not sure that's a positive but it has been amusing.

Maybe I should do a "fast" like this every once in awhile.

Or not ;)

Prayers going every which away today...

Elizabeth Edwards, hope your tests give you good news and that all goes well.

Citizens of the Middle East, I fear even more troubling times are ahead of us.  I pray for all our safety.

Citizens of the World, I pray we the human race survives the next 100 years.  We can find ways to agree to disagree on some issues and ways to agree on others - can't we?  Even squabbling siblings sharing a bedroom find ways to coexist without shedding (much) blood.

My fellow Americans - for goodness sakes, the election was Tuesday. Stop the name-calling and if you want to see change, MAKE it happen.  Don't wait for someone else to do it for you. You can affect the big picture by tackling the smaller issues.  Volunteer somewhere - put your muscle where your mouth is (and stop hogging tblurt, we have serious flirting to do in there!)

Mostly, I pray that my internet access is working from home again.  It was down all day yesterday and when I left for work this morning.  If there's a god let my connection complete!  Set my pinger free!  (giggle)

My Ultimate Dream
11.03.04 (9:41 pm)   [edit]
Altrical asked - if there were no barriers, what would you do with your life?

My first thought was to buy a castle in Scotland and travel all over Europe :) but my ultimate dream has nothing to do with any of that.

I've always wanted to found a home/training center for women and their children that need to escape a bad home situation. It would have training classes in basic computer skills, it would have a used-clothing center for business-type apparel, it would have daycare facilities for those who need it, etc. It would be partly self-sufficient with residents working the kitchen, record-keeping, etc. My brother and father could do counseling, Mom and I could teach classes, and so on. And the security would be amazing.

Too many women feel trapped because they maybe dependent on their SO, or not be able to support themselves for those first few months, or need their skills freshened up, or don't have the right clothing, or whatever. This place could eliminate all those hurdles and be a very positive, loving safe-house. So there ya go, that's my dream :) but there would still be European vacations and winters in the Bahamas :)

I'm a Lucky Girl
11.03.04 (8:35 am)   [edit]

Got loads to be bummed-stressed about today  but decided to take a different tack. This is sort of a pre-Thanksgiving "What I'm Thankful For" post.  Besides the usuals like family, shelter, etc.... in no particular order:

I live in a country that's full of crazy people - some in a good way, some in a bad way, but somehow it sticks together.  On travels, 99% of the people I meet are awesome, so I need to remember that when I watch the news.  :?

I have some incredible friends around the world --> see Music slideshow at right!  Aren't they adorable?  Dutch, Welsh, Finnish, German, an American or two.. ooo la la!  And so nice. Not to mention talent out the wazoo.  Nothing brightens the day like a note out of the blue from a handsome man. (wiggles eyebrows up and down).  Or a comment from a tblog reader  Nudge Nudge!

I'm thankful that agoraphobia / anxiety-attacks no longer rules my life.  It had me so wrapped up in my head for a few years I could rarely leave the house.  I may have a "pang" once in awhile but overall I am free from it.  Thank GOD.

I'm glad I have cable tv so I could avoid most of the hateful political ads that have poisoned the air waves these past weeks.  Yay!

I'm thankful for meds - woke up this morning to a river flowing from my eyes and nose.  Of course, now my brain is full of fuzzy cotton but I can breathe!  :)

Health - let's all give ScubaDiva and 14u2nv some good healing vibes from their surgeries/procedures, mkay?

I think I can face the day now :)  Hope this helped you stop for a sec and think on something you're thankful for, too.  Cheers! :D

Where Have You Been!?!
11.01.04 (9:49 pm)   [edit]

I found this on a LiveJournal blog and thought it looked fun - the red states are those I've visited. Nearly half! Some visits have been on business (Texas) some have been purely for fun (California), others as a kid (camping in Arkansas), places I've lived (Virginia, W.Va., Ohio, Mississippi), even a quick drive into Maine just to say I'd been there :)

This is NOT AN ELECTION MAP, DAMMIT!   ;) and if I could've chosen a color besides red, I would, believe me!
create your own visited states map or check out these Google Hacks.

Just think - Lynne will be adding Hawaii soon!  Lucky girl!

Slide shows!
11.01.04 (12:03 pm)   [edit]

Before I forget - I added a new slideshow over to the right.
The older one of my daughter remains a collection of cuteness.
The newer one of my musical pals ... well.. some of them are cute ;)

And the accents?  Oy vey!  (Hey, Tal, call me, dude!)

Living in Ohio pre-Election Day
11.01.04 (12:01 pm)   [edit]

Holy frijoles.  I've gotten so many calls, cards and letters about the election tomorrow that it isn't even funny.  That's why the phone call I got yesterday was so much fun...

"May I speak to Sheryl please?"
"This is me."
"Yes, I'm ____ from Americans Coming Together and I'm calling today to remind you get out and vote in the upcoming election, Tuesday is just around the corner."
"You're kidding - it's THIS Tuesday? I'd forgotten all about it."
{Silence ... then ... } "Are you serious?"
"No.  I've been saturated with cards, letters and calls lately and I thought I'd enjoy this one."

At least he had a sense of humor :)

Trick or Treat Recap
11.01.04 (8:04 am)   [edit]

What a lovely night.  The weather was gorgeous (she says as it's overcast and rainy today).  Katie was in her purple ballerina outfit and princess hat, Bailey was dressed as Sleeping Beauty.  They're not quite a year apart but are the same size.  Katie is very fair, Bailey is very dark.  They look so cute together, our Miss Salt and Miss Pepper (ooh, that would be cute for next year!).

They drug their feet between houses - played with the flashlight, checked out decorations, petted dogs or cats, etc. then would ZOOM up the driveway with their bags.  "Twick oh Tweat!  Tank You!" and then off to the next house.  They wore out after about an hour so we went back to our house to pass out candy.

In our neighborhood, most people sit out in the front yards to pass out candy.  It's so much nicer that way - lots of visiting, friendly heckling "HEY, NICE MASK!" (when none is on, of course) and so on.  Some even have portable fireplaces and a few beverages on ice (the pros?)  The people that show movies in the summer had a helium tank and were giving out balloons along with treats.  It started getting chilly so I brought out some blankets but Katie didn't want to go inside.  She laughed at the scariest masks, which I thought was funny.  People across the street were playing scary music like the soundtrack to "Nightmare Before Christmas". At 8 o'clock, we all packed up and went inside to warm up, check out the loot, and wait for the sugar buzzes to ebb.  We had a great time, hope you all did too!!!
